For example, a 1-1/2″ pipe size actually has an outside diameter of 1.9″ NOT 1.5″. The table below cross-references the nominal dimension of a PIPE with its actual outside diameter. For sizes from 1/8-inch through 12-inch, the NPS corresponds to the nominal inside diameter, but differs somewhat from its actual inside diameter.

The 1/2 pex tube has an inner support for even compression of the tube at each fitting connection. The inside diameter of these connections is 3/8". Remember, the water stop in the spout that triggers the flow into the shower head isn't a real valve. All it does is impead the flow.

The INSIDE diameter is nominally, or approximately, 1/2". The EXACT outside diameter is 5/8". Virtually any compression angle stop you look at will specify that it is for " half inch copper" or will say "half inch nominal" or it will say " 5/8 compression ". These three terms are used interchangeably, and are identical.

Looking at the diameters of the two pipes the copper is definitely larger than the PEX. Is it ok to use the 1/2 inch PEX? My house is plumbed with 1/2 and 3/4 inch copper and he wants to replace both with 1/2 PEX and 3/4 copper. Sure doesn't sound right to me. Any help please. You have 1/2" copper pipe. In my area 99% of the angle stops are 1/2" nom compression inlet x 3/8" OD compression outlet. If you were going to go with compression angle stops, I'd use a quarter turn ball valve from Brass Craft, part # KTCR19 C. I recently changed to only selling Brass Craft quarter turn stops.
